    The area of Lake Shoji (Lake Shojiko) has a plenty of nature known as the best view spot among the five lakes of Mt.Fuji. People can enjoy many nat ural leisure activities such as fishing, rowing a canoe and camping.

    The lake is not so big, people enjoy biking and driving around the lake while seeing the scenery. It is also recommended to people who would like to spend a time in a relaxed pace.

    Lake Shoji and around place is consistently voted as one of the country’s most bike-friendly cities, with a spectacular rides within easy reach. Recently increase in popularity of bike commuting and you can rides in nature with Mt.Fuji.

    5th. Shojiko Information Centre

    People can get leisure information in Lake Shoji area at Shojiko tourist information center. In front of the center, you can get a beautiful view of Mt. Fuji as well. It provides guidebooks, the place to rest and a restaurant for tourists. Also, there is a camp site nearby. The opening hours of the information center is irregular.

    Directions to Shojiko Information center, take a sightseeing bus (blue line which covers the area of Narusawa, Lake Shoji and Lake Motosu) at Kawagugchiko station and get off at Shoji bus stop. The information center is right in front.

    4th. Shojinsuwa Shrine

    Shoji Suwa Shrine is located at the north side of Lake Shoji. It is known as a local guardian deity of Shoji area. The main hall was reconstructed in 1843. Its intricate carvings and skillful techniques are outstanding.
    A part of roof called “Ooiya” protects mail hall and it was constructed in 1906.

    On its cell, the picture of playing with “Hyaku nin Ishu” or “a traditional playing game of the one hundred poems written by one hundred poets” is drawn.

    Directions to Shoji Suwa Shirne, take a sightseeing bus (blue line which covers the area of Narusawa, Lake Shoji and Lake Motosu) at Kawagugchiko station and get off at Shoji bus stop. It takes about a couple minutes’ walk to Shoji Suwa shrine.

    3rd. Shoji-no-Osugi

    A giant cedar tree is in Shoji Suwa Shrine. As it is said that the divine spirits are lived in trees and rocks since early days, this cedar tree has been dedicated as a sacred tree by people. It was designated as a national natural monument. It is about 1200 years old tree.

    The circumference is about 10 meters (about 32 feet) and the height is about 40 meters (about 131 feet). When you look up the tree, you can see that intricacy shaped branches are spreading out.

    2nd. Lake Shoji

    Lake Shoji is known as the smallest lake in the Five lakes of Mt.Fuji. It is about 5 kilometers (about 3.1mi) around and takes about 1 hour by walk. The scenery of Lake Shoji is called “Switzerland of the East” having a rich of nature. The surface of the lake is calm, many people enjoy fishing on a boat and rowing a canoe. In 1895, British man, Harry Stewart Whitworth took a year to find the best place for viewing Mt.Fuji and that was Lake Shoji.

    It has been loved as “Japan Gorge” by many foreign visitors. When people look at Mt.Fuji from Lake Shoji, they can see a small mountain named Mt.Omuro in front of Mt.Fuji. It looks like Mt. Fuji is holding Mt.Omuro so that the scenery from here is called “Kodaki Fuji” or “Mt.Fuji embracing a child mountain”.

    1st. Shojiko Panorama Dai

    Panorama Dai is a great observatory where you can enjoy panoramic view of Mt.Fuji, forest and lake at once. To the panoramic observatory, it takes about 1 hour by hiking. The best season to hike is between summer and autumn, not recommended visiting during winter season because of a lot of snow. When you reach to the observatory, people can get a magnificent view of Mt.Fuji just in front as well as farther whole scenery.

    If people would like to take stunning pictures of Japan, this is it. It is free admission.

    Directions to Panorama Dai, take sightseeing bus (Blue line which covers the area of Narusawa, Lake Shoji and Lake Motosu) at Kawaguchiko station and get off at Panorama Dai bus stop. Then it takes about 1 hour by walk from the bus stop from the bus stop to get there.

    3. Getting to Shoji bus stop from Kawaguchiko station

    Take a sightseeing bus (blue line which covers the area of Narusawa, Lake Shoji and Lake Motosu) at Kawaguchiko station and get off at Shoji bus stop. Then walk about a couple minutes to get there.

    It takes about 50 minutes by bus and the bus fare (one-way) is 990 yen. If people would like to get on and off on the way, let’s get 2-days pass (1500 yen) at the station

    After Tokaido line(Gotemba line) have started operating at Gotemba/Susono area in 1889, it became famous among Mount Fuji climbers and summer resort for tourists. There are many tourist point such as campsite, ski resort, and huge suspension bridge to look over Mount Fuji. There is even one of the biggest outlet mall in Gotemba area called “Gotemba Premium Outletmall”. Moreover, the path in Gotemba is also known for “Fuji Tozan Ekiden” which is a road relay held every year in new year season.

    1. Spot ranking in Gotemba – Susono area

    5th. Komakado Kazaana Cave

    Komakado Kazaana Cave is a lava tube that was made 10 thousand years ago after Mount Fuji eruption. The total length is about 409 meter and compared to the other caves near Mount Fuji, here is the largest and the oldest of all. There are two holes in this cave, “Hon-Ana(291 meter long)” and “Eda-Ana”(110 meter long). You can enjoy seeing stalactites made from lava and marks of lava flow. The cave stays costant of 13 degrees all year. Near the enterance, there is water which is infiltrated and comes directly from Mount Fuji. It is also designated as a natural treasure and you can actually drink the water. Interesting fact about the cave, the insects inside the cave, their eyes are all degenerated. So try to find it and see it for your self.

    It is open from 9:00-17:00(from December to February, the closing time will be 16:00.)
    The enterance fee is 200JPY/Adult, 150JPY/Junior&Highschool students, 100JPY/Child.

    To get to the cave, take the train from Gotemba station (JR Gotemba line) and get off at “Fujioka station”. It is about 20 minutes walk from the station.

    4th. Chichibunomiya Memorial Park

    Chichibunomiya Memorial Park is a park, but used to be a villa where the loyal Chichibunomiya family have lived. You can enjoy the flowers each season; ume blossom and weeping cherry in Spring, cotton rose and crape myrtle in Summer, autumn leaves and fragrant olives in Autumn). There are many cherished objects exhibited that the loyal families have actually used inside the profound feeling thatched memorial hall which the building is more than 280 years old.

    It is open from 9:00-16:30(Last entry is 16:00). On April it changes to 9:00-17:00(Last entry is 16:30). From June to August it changes to 9:00-17:30(Last entry is 17:00). Every 3rd Monday (If it is a national holiday it will close the next day) will be closed. The entry fee is 300JPY/Adult and 150JPY/6-15 years old.

    To get to Chichibunomiya Memorial Park, take a free shuttle bus that bounds for “Gotemba-Onsen-Kaikan” from bus stop 7 at JR Gotemba station and get off at “Chichibunomiya-Kinnen-Koen”. It is about 10 minutes to get there.

    3rd. Jurigi Kogen Observation Deck

    Jurigi Kogen Observation Deck is 1099 meter high observation deck where you can see the beautiful Mount Fuji. You have to climb up the stair case which is just on the edge of the parking lot. It takes 5 minutes to reach the top if you’re an adult but probably takes abou 10 minutes for children. As you reach to the top, on your way you can see Mount Ashitaka, south alps and of course Mount Fuji.

    Long time ago, there used to be path that connected Fujinomiya and Hakone-Takenoshita, and there was a barrier in between. However, nowadays the land have developed greatly and it turned into a leisure resort that has a camping area and an amusement park.

    To get here,take a local train that bounds for “Numadsu” from Gotemba station(Gootemba line) and get off at “Susono station”. Transfer to Fujikyu City bus and get off at “Jurigi”. It is a 10 minute walk to Jurigi Kogen Observation Deck.

    2nd. Gotemba Kogen Toki No Sumika

    Gotemba Kogen Toki No Sumika is a leisure resort with many facilities such as hotel, hot spring, restaurant, sport facilities and liesure facilities. It is placed in side the nature of Gotemba city, and it is also famous for it’s beautiful illumination that can be seen during winter season. The illumination called “Hikaru-no-Sumika”can be seen in October through March. If you want to stay longer in Gotemba area and feel the nature a little bit more, here is the best place to stay.

    To get here take a train from Gotemba station(Gootemba line) and get off at “Iwanami station”. Then take a taxi which is only 5 minutes to reach Gotemba Kogen Toki No Sumika.

    1th. Suyamasengen Shrine

    Suyamasengen Shrine was listed as a world heritage at the same time when Mount Fuji was designated. There are several climbing trails to enter Mount Fuji and here in Suyamasengen is one of the starting point. From long time ago, many people started from this point when climbing up Mount Fuji so they can make their good luck wishes at this shrine before starting their adventure. Inside the shrine there are many large cedar tree which you can feel the spiritual power of Mount Fuji and the long history of this place.

    The main shrine was re-built in year 1823 but according to the shrine’s biography, the main shrine was actually built way long ago which leads to the time in Japanese mythology. It is believed that it was made in year 1524 at the latest. On the right side of the main shrine, there is a shrine called “Komiya-Shrine”. From the name and the appearance(such as shape) it was built in the 17th century and used to be the main shrine of Suyamasengen..

    To get here ride the Fujikyu Bus from Gotemba station and get off at “Sengen-Jinjya-Iriguchi”.

    2. Getting to Susono Station from Gotemba Station

    From Gotemba station take a local train(Gotemba line) bound for Numadsu and get off at “Susono” station. It is about 18 minutes and costs 320JPY.
